New Docking Area: A Sheltered Breakwall Dock for the MuVIT Boating Simulator

Finding good docking scenery is a hit-or-miss exercise and that’s true whether you’re out on the water or hunting for scenarios to load into a MuVIT boating simulator. Docks tend to turn up in unlikely locations, not necessarily where you’d expect them, and not always where the charts say they should be. That’s part of the challenge of teaching local-knowledge skills at anything beyond a general level, especially since most simulator scenery is built by developers overseas who aren’t working from firsthand knowledge of these waterways.

That’s why there’s an ongoing hunt for docks of different types that can be turned into real docking exercises for the MuVIT boating simulator. The latest discovery is a good one: a dock tucked inside a breakwall.

A Tricky, Realistic Approach

Docking inside breakwalls makes for a great boating simulator exercise because they demand attention to detail. Approaching and exiting a sheltered area like this often means working through what looks like a hidden channel or a maze-type entrance there’s no room to wing it.

One nice bit of realism that turned up while testing this scenario: crank up the wind outside the breakwall, and you can watch the waves and wind calm down noticeably once you enter the sheltered area, just as you’d expect in real life.

Chart vs. Radar: Two Views of the Same Dock

Seeing both side by side reinforces something every boater eventually learns: charts and radar don’t always tell quite the same story, and knowing how to read both is a skill worth practicing before you need it for real.
